4.-December 20: Jaime Serra Puche, Secretary of Finance of the Mexican government of President Ernesto Zedillo, devalued the currency of 3'50 to 6'50 pesos per dollar, causing an economic crisis that affected several Latin American economies.
5.-December 21: an explosion of the volcano Popocatepetl, Mexico, which expelled gas and ash over 25 miles away.
EXPLOSION OF THE VOLCANO POPOCATEPETL
On December 21, 1994 an explosion occurred which produced gas and ash that were carried by prevailing winds over 25 miles away. His current activity is moderate, but steady, with emission of fumaroles, composed of gases and water vapor, and sudden and unexpected expulsion under ash and volcanic material. The last violent eruption of the volcano was registered in December 2000, following the predictions of scientists, led to the evacuation of thousands of people in the areas near the volcano.
